Electronic Arts found themselves in a bit of hot water after a promotion for their just-released Mercenaries 2: World in Flames did not go quite as smoothly as hoped.
In an attempt to promote the game EA had some "mercs" take over a gas station in North London to give upwards of GBP 20,000 worth of gas (USD 35,000) out to drivers free of charge- GBP 40 to each one. In the end, local police shut the promotion down after long lines made for unsafe conditions due to the traffic jams created.
Despite being cut short the promotion did do its job as some that did manage to get a free fill up were interested in getting the game. Below you will find a BBC News report on the story- bit of extra unbargained-for free publicity for the whole thing.
