ALL - Midway Austin Studio Cuts Back Staff, Cancels Upcoming Project
Midway Games' management staff saw a few of its high-profile members, such as Chicago studio chief Mike Bilder and director of media relations Reilly Brennan, depart from the organization. As if that wasn't enough, their Austin studio (which was responsible for 2005's Area 51 and Blacksite: Area 51) has just announced a few more staff reductions. Before it was purchased by Midway in 2004, the said studio also took development reins on 2002's Tribes Aerial Assault for Sierra Entertainment.
Midway released a statement recently detailing that it canceled an as-yet-unannounced project in production in its Austin, Texas facility. As a result, Midway will have a reduction in force of a portion of the affected development team. Furthermore, it was detailed that around 90 to 130 positions will be vacated. However, a couple of teams will continue its work on “unnamed prototype projects intended to expand Midway's portfolio of new intellectual property.”
Midway's interim CEO and president, Matt Booty, had this to say: “While this was a very difficult decision, we feel it was the right thing to do for the future of Midway...We view every game as an investment that must meet certain standards for quality, scheduling, and profitability.”
The closure of the Austin studio follows a week after it achieved demoralizing results during its second fiscal quarter. Within a three-month period, its drop in sales amounted to $34.8 million, after releasing only NBA Ballers: Chosen One for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Meanwhile, for this quarter they have managed to release UT3 for the Xbox 360 and TNA Impact! is also scheduled for release this September. They've also got a few games lined up for the holidays, including Blitz: The League II and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
