ALL - New Bill Proposal Suggests ID Checks For M Rated Titles
Yesterday two members of Congress introduced a new bill which, if passed, may be just the thing to keep the panic mongers at bay in regards to keeping M rated titles out of the hands of minors- ID checks.
Lee Terry (R-Neb.) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah) introduced this bill as an alternate idea to those that have come (and failed) before. If passed, retailers would have to ask for ID if they feel someone may be below the recommended age for an M rated title. They will also have to prominently post the ESRB rating system to give customers a heads-up on the meanings. Those not following the bill could be fined up to $5000.
Congressman Lee Terry is keeping hopeful about this bill. As he explains, "This bill doesn’t involve itself in content or defining the standards for "mature" or "adults only". It simply requires the retailer to post what the industry has defined as "mature" and "adults only" so that parents can know, and requires checking of identification."
This certainly sounds to be much more common sense than the other bills that have been shot down as infringing on amendment rights before. We'll keep you updated on progress regarding this as they come in.
