ALL - The PlayStation Week That Was

This past week witnessed some major shake-ups and a few more exciting surprises for fans in the gaming community. As we look forward to the release of many highly anticipated titles (some are slated for release late this month or early November), there has been a lot of activity that will surely keep fans occupied while waiting.

After months of speculation regarding the much talked about 40GB PS3 model to be released by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE), we finally got some details on the manufacturers' end of the spectrum. Sony Europe has finally released a press release which confirms the launching of the 40GB PS3 model all throughout the SCEE territories on the 10th of this month, meaning Euro fans can now get their hands on this model. A representative from the company has detailed that the new model, which is priced at ₤399, was determined through user feedbacks and some research done from potential owners.

Meanwhile, moving over to North America, there has been some updates made on some new contents that are available for the Playstation Store this week. There is a great list of games (Go! Sports Ski for 2.99 US), demos (The Simpsons and Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War demo), tutorials (NBA 08 and Eye of Judgment tutorial videos), and some other videos (Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Tekkonkinkreet, and Surf's Up trailer) that you can upload from the PS Store.

THQ's WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2008 is a popular title that fans have been itching to play, but since it will not be released yet fans can avail of the next best thing: a free demo for the PS3 version of the game. The demo will be available on October 15th at the Playstation Network and fans will get to sample new fighting moves from Rey Mysterio, the “Phenom” undertaker, Bobby Lashley, and Randy Orton during the demo. Truly something that fans should not dare miss!

Everyone seems to be talking much about the upcoming holiday season when the Halloween is just around the corner. But with the list of Blu-Ray movies slated for release this week, movie fans will surely be in for a Halloween treat. You'll be treated to such horror classics as Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and "Halloween", as well as some new spine-chilling films "Dawn of the Dead" and "A Room with a View".

This new set of Blu-Ray movies should help boost an already overwhelming sale for the Blu-Ray, outselling HD-DVD via a major deficit. The standalone Blu-Ray player also shared the same fate in terms of sales despite its US $299 price tag.

Moving over to the highest selling console of all time, the PS2 is looking to be pimped with two new fighting games from SNK Playmore—The King of Fighters XI and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. You can now grab a copy of the former in your local retail stores as it was released last October 4, while Neo Geo Battle fans won't have to wait much longer for the game will be out on the 23rd of this month.

A game who won't be making it to the PS2 just yet in the UK is Manhunt 2, right after BBFC has rejected the revised version of the game. Officials from BBFC have stated their reason for rejecting the original version and would have hoped the developers did something about it, but it seems like it that even the revised version does not make the cut. The game's distributors have made an appeal to the Video Appeals Committee.

Another controversy that's shaping up in the world of PS2 gaming is circled around a supposed “copycat” controller from Microsoft for the game Scene It!. Apparently, PS2's quiz show Buzz! originally developed the design for the controller, which eventually became such a huge hit in the market and earned the controller quite a distinction as peripheral for the game. Now, who would have thought that such drama could exist in the ever-fun gaming world?

And finally, the handheld console have also had its own share of big-time news apart from its Slim version's record-breaking sales in Japan. Any fan would be thrilled to try out two new promising releases on the PSP—Secret Agent Clank and Boulder Dash-Rocks!.

Developed by High Impact games, Secret Agent Clank does not come out until 2008 but knowing that this game is on the way can't keep fans from getting all excited. Meanwhile, Boulder Dash-Rocks! with such powerhouse combination as Rockford, First Star Software, Inc., and Electronic Arts (EA) working on this game, it is definitely a huge leap from its original release with an improved look and gameplay.

These games might be a good way to try the new rumbling technology being developed by Immersion for the handheld console. Yes, you heard me right! Immersion, who is responsible for bringing rumbling technology to the Playstation gaming controllers, is set to do the same for the PSP. With these new advanced technical enhancements, it has certainly taken your handheld gaming experience beyond anything you could imagine.
