PS2 - PlayStation 2 Not Dead !
Crave Entertainment COO Rob Dyer recently gave his opinion regarding the stiff competition going on between multiple consoles in the market.
He thinks that the market is dominated by four consoles and two handhelds. “Christmas will be very strong and we see PS2, Wii and the handhelds leading the way for us,” he adds.
He also believes that the PS2 will be in on the current software battle, and recent software sales are there to prove his observation. Just this August, Madden 08 for the PS2 was the second highest selling game in the US, while both Guitar Hero II and Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s were also making waves in the games charts. The same also goes in Europe as the FIFA 08's PS2 version is topping the charts in Germany and Spain.
In fact, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has predicted a US $101 million total in sales for the PS2 software in the US alone.
Meanwhile, Dyer has also commented on the arrival of cheaper PS3 units in the US. He believes that the price of development, and not the retail price, is the concern of most small publishers.
Dyer concludes by saying, “Until there is an affordable and predictable middleware solution for the PS3, it will be tough for smaller publishers to get games into market for the next year or two.”
