PS2 - PS2 Outsells PS3 By 4 Million In 2008
Based on the latest sales figures, it was revealed that the PlayStation 2 was able to sell more units over Sony's next-gen console, PlayStation 3, during 2008.
After almost eight years since it was launched, PS2 was able to sell 13.73 units worldwide by the year ending March 31. Hence, PS2 manages to leave PS3 in the dust with a lower total of units sold at 9.24 million.
However, a more important thing to note is that despite PS2's lead in terms of the number of units sold, it suffered a 7% loss in sales while the PS3 gained 156% increase, as compared to last year's numbers.
However, the biggest winner among the Sony consoles is the PlayStation Portable after selling a total of 13.9 million units worldwide for the last financial year, and also experiencing a 46% increase in sales. Truly, it is one hit games machine!
When it comes to the software end of the sales, the PlayStation 3 has had a major boost with a 335% up in sales for the past year with 57.9 million games. As for the PSP's 55 million games sold, it saw only a 1% increase.
But hold on, the PlayStation 2 is the software sales winner for Sony after it sold 154 million units, despite suffering a 20% drop from last year.
