PS2 - Rockstar Wins Decision On UK Manhunt 2 Appeal
It might be safe to say that Rockstar's appeal to the BBFC's decision of rejecting the revised Manhunt 2 version was a success. Though the final judgment has yet to be released, the Video Appeals Committee has reached a decision that went in favor of Rockstar.
BBFC Director David Cooke said that “The BBFC will carefully study the judgment by the Video Appeals Committee when it becomes available.” He also noted that they have reviewed the game for over 30 hours before deciding to reject it.
BBFC Spokesperson Sue Clark further details that “There are few options open to us – we can go to the High Court to appeal the decision – but we'll be making a further statement when we've seen the full report.”
Meanwhile, Cooke has cited Manhunt 2's “focus on varied and cumulative killings” which led to their decision to reject the game. He also adds that there “must be [balance] against the public interest, including the full range of possible harm risks to vulnerable individual and to any children who may be wrongly exposed to such games.”
The future of Manhunt 2, as to whether or not it will reach UK store shelves will depend greatly on the BBFC's decision to appeal the Video Appeals Committee's decision.
Here is Rockstar's statement concerning these recent developments: “We are committed to making great interactive entertainment, while also marketing our products responsibly and supporting an effective rating system. We are pleased that the decision of the VAC has recognised that Manhunt 2 is well within the bounds established by other 18+ rated entertainment."
