PS3 - EA Explains Army of Two Region Lock
Those of you playing Army of Two may have realized by now you are not able to play with people worldwide. Also, those that have imported the game may be surprised to find it doesn't work on their system. These things were supposed to be region free, right?
Well, EA figured better to face the music rather than try to dance around it and explained why they decided to go this route. The main reasoning, according to lead designer Reid Schneider, was the peer-to-peer networking approach used for the online play.
"Army of Two uses a deterministic (peer to peer) approach for networking versus a traditional client-server approach. We do this so we can have all the synchronized animation gameplay that exist in the game.
"This solution is solid for our game but also exposes us to risk in terms of lag, if we're not careful. In a peer to peer connection the person with the worst connection brings down the whole group to his/her worst connection level.
"While not generally a problem for COOP (since most people play co-op with friends) when playing in Versus mode 3 people can be highly adversely affected by one player with a bad connection. We use the region lock to minimize the likelihood of this occurring."
The other consideration when deciding on this was territorial differences. Some areas look down on some aspects of the game- as an example, the Asian version has restrictions on the shooting down of bodies. Because EA did not want to remove this from other versions changes had to be made.
