EA's FIFA 08, deemed as the greatest title ever released from the said franchise series, became the first title released in 2007 that reached the one millionth mark in sales at UK retail.

Electronic Arts cited a few reasons credited to the game's success – the brand new game engine, extensive in-game licenses, inclusion of the FA Cup and (of course) the ongoing issues surrounding its rival soccer simulation title, Konami's PES 2008.
