Lately much has been said around the web about the upcoming firmware update for the PS3, although most of that has been speculation about what will be in it. We knew already about the Trophy system and the in-game XMB access, but what else is there?
Well, for you extra- popular people the friends list will now be bumped up to 100 people, doubling its size (it has been capped at 50 from the start). The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you're using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. A few more minor enhancements are to be included as well.
Super Stardust HD will be among the first games to use the trophy system. Those who have already purchased the game will be asked to download a patch to enable it- first time buyers will have it from the get-go soon after the firmware in released.
Sounds good but when is it coming out, you say? Sooner than you think- the new firmware will be available on Wednesday, July 2! To keep you a bit anxious about it, here are a couple of videos featuring Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, showing off the XMB access and the trophies. Enjoy!
