PS3 - Firmware 2.40 Update Pulled From Server
Those of you that did not get the firmware update yesterday may have had a surprise when you did finally go looking for it.
Following reports of the firmware install messing up systems on the official PlayStation blog and via calls to Sony's tech support it was decided to remove the 2.40 update from the server. Those that are running version 2.36 will see a message saying they already have the latest version.
In these relatively isolated cases, when the system did its restart after installing the PS3 would only get as far as the background screen and hang up, making the XMB inaccessible and leaving gamers unable to do anything with their PS3.
Patric Seybold, Sony's PR head, said in a statement, "While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up."
Those that were able to successfully get and install the update should have no problems- the error only happene during the reboot after installing the update.
If you are one of the people who has had their system affected by this I advise contacting Sony's technical department.
