PS3 - Firmware 3.21 To Remove "Other OS" Support Thursday
When a company often announces a firmware update, it is usually to add more functionality into a system. But Sony is taking a different route with the new 3.21 PS3 firmware update, which will go live on April 1. The ability to install another operating system on the PS3 will be removed with this latest software revision, something that was already previously done on the PS3 Slim.
Patrick Seybold of SCEA explains the reason behind the removal of the said functionality, saying it was “due to security concerns...[and] will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”
Many suspect this was done after a recent report of the PS3 “hacked”. Although the response to this decision at Sony was mostly negative, the heads at Sony were standing firm on this decision, especially after another Sony hardware was also plagued with piracy – the PSP.
