PS3 - Folding@Home Reaches 1 Million Users
Did you know that not only is the PlayStation 3 an excellent game console/ DVD player/ Blu-Ray movie player/ CD player/ digital media player, it also helps in the fight to cure diseases?
It's true, thanks to the Folding@Home program initiated by Stanford University's medical research division. This program runs during idle time on the PS3 (won't mess up your gaming or any other activity) to process data called "work units" sent to it over the internet. Once completed the results get sent back and another unit gets sent down. The object? Find breakthroughs toward cures of several life-hreatening diseases including Alzeimer's, Parkinson's Disease and forms of cancer.
This program reached a milestone Tuesday with 1 million people using the PS3 to run this program That is a growth of about 3,000 people a day since the debut back in March 2007. Stanford Associate Professor of Chemistry Vijay Pande had this to say:
"Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@Home users.
"Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@Home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the world’s most life-threatening diseases."
I'd like to take a moment to invite the members of Absolute PlayStation (as well as any guests reading this) to join the Absolute PlayStation team. As of this moment we are sitting in 1,282nd place out of over 100,000 teams- pretty good considering the low number of current active folders we have but I believe we can do more.
To join the team go to the Identity portion of the options menu (hit triangle when running the program to reach this) and select "Join an existing team". Enter the team number 54263 and that's it- you are now on the team!
