PS3 - It's Official: Toshiba Discontinuing HD- DVD

It was all but official when we reported the possibility of the HD- DVD format being dropped. Toshiba has officially announced today they are doing just that following what they say are "major changes in the market", in reference to the mass move from other companies to the Blu-Ray camp. This decision was made during a board meeting held earlier today.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation.

"While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."

The company will now refocus its efforts on a variety of high definition technologies, including "NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies."

Shipments of HD- DVD players should end by the end of March- Toshiba promises to continue with technical support for those currently in homes.

With Blu-Ray the official standard for hi- def movies this could make for an increase in PS3 sales as the indecision regarding formats is now gone. A recent analyst report speculated the PS3 will see a major jump this year, possibly up to 20 million units installed worldwide.
