PS3 - Launching In April? (updated)

During an interview with CNet Sir Howard Stringer, the CEO of Sony, let slip that thePlayStation 3 may not launch until sometime in April in the UK and Europe. When asked what goals Sony were going to try to acheive in 2007 this was his response:

¨I think it’s 6 million units by the end of the quarter, worldwide. And then we have got the European launch in April, which is very important to us. I think we have 20 games out there. I assume we’re going to increase the number of games.

Lost in the shuffle is the fact that the current games that are out there are only using about 20 percent to 25 percent of the bandwidth. Once the publishers’ excitement reaches a level of intensity that they start using more of the bandwidth, that will create additional excitement.

Secondly, there now are 1 million Blu-ray players in the market, and each of those in the United States has a Blu-ray disc because we put Talladega Nights inside.¨

There are just a couple of mistakes in what he said- when Stringer said ¨bandwidth¨ he obviously meant processing power and the Blu-Ray movie ¨Talledega Nights¨ was only included with the first 500,000 units.

During the interview he also stated Sony hopes to break even on console sales by the end of 2007. If that is the case it would put a number of analysts in the wrong and maybe pave the way to a possible price cut in the years to come.

Update- A Sony Europe spokesperson has said Sir Howard´s cmment about an April launch is mistaken and the launch date is still scheduled to be March 23. An official statement is expected from SCEE next week.
