PS3 - Nielson Survey Reveals How Under Age Buyers Get GTA IV
Nielsen conducted a recent survey which revealed alarming details. Despite the efforts of providing tight game ratings in retail stores such as GameStop and Best Buy, still there are several M-rated titles that end up in the hands of underage buyers.
The survey was focused mainly on Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 4 (PS3, Xbox 360) and has reported that some underaged respondents to their survey were able to purchase the game. It was also revealed that 61% of respondents purchased the said game themselves while 39% had somebody else buy it for them. It is important to note that these underage gamers ranged from ages 7 to 16.
However, the biggest surprise from the said survey's report was that the “parents/guardians were pegged as the biggest facilitators for getting the controversial game into the hands of these young respondents, garnering 80% of the response. Friends, siblings and other relatives rounded out the other 20% of the response.”
Meanwhile, another important detailed revealed by the study is that the respondent's decision to purchase was enhanced by the exclusive content of Microsoft's GTA 4 DLC. 25% of those who purchased the GTA4 Xbox 360 version pointed to the DLC as a factor that led them to purchase the game, while the rest stated that they merely preferred the Xbox 360 version over that of the PS3.
