PS3 - Price Drop, New Bundle Starting Today
The news from E3 has started already and the news is good if you were holding off on buying the PS3.
Effective today the price of the 60 GB model PlayStation 3 is dropped $100, bringing it to USD $499/ CAD $549. Big news in and of itself but that isn´t all. The 80GB version, originally launched only in South Korea, is also being made available to North America at the price of USD $599/ CAD $659. A ¨limited edition¨ bundle will be available which includes the game Motorstorm and the 80 GB system. One item to note about the 80 GB system is it will use a software emulator for backward compatibility, which is currently the case for the 60 Gb system in the UK and Europe.
To some this news comes none too soon and shows that Sony is now trying to aggressively expand their user base. May saw the system sell a mere 82,000 systems, compared to 155,00 for the XBox 360 and 338,000 for the Nintendo Wii. Both the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation portable sold more units as well, with 188,000 and 221,000 units, respectively.
This price cut is only for the North American markets- no word if they plan to follow suit in the UK/ European markets.
