PS3 - Rumor Central: 80 GB On Way Out, New Models Coming?
There have been several stories going around lately regarding the fate of the 80 GB model of the PlayStation 3 and of new versions coming.
First up, there was an article saying Best Buy, one of the largest sellers of the PS3, was no longer carrying the 80 GB system. If one does a search on their US site now one finds only one result, the 40 GB system. The Canadian BB site still has the 80 GB system but this could be clearing out the remaining stock.
Soon after this was brought to light word came that the EB Games/ Gamestop chain of stores was no longer going to carry the 80 GB system. Reportedly, an EB games store manager has revealed this to a gaming blog after checking his back office Inventory The only version shown as active was the 40 GB model- all others, including the 80 GB, were marked with a D. This letter is the mark EB uses for products no longer being carried by the chain.
Considering this particular store manager is the same one that game an advance heads up on the 20 GB model being discontinued, the odds are very good that the same is happening again with the 80 GB (especially with Kaz Hirai's recent statements regarding backward compatibility). It is looking very much like we may only be seeing one version of the PS3 on shelves in the near future.
Or, is it? Just today a "Sony Insider" has let slip that we could be seeing new PS3's sometime this year with 120 GB or even 160 GB hard drives for the same price we currently see for the 80 GB system. Just to make this even more enticing, he says these new systems would also include the DualShock 3 controller, not the regular SixAxis.
Officially, Sony reps have said "no comment" when asked about new SKU's coming out. According to this insider, however, it is only a matter of time before the 80 gets replaced.
So, how much truth is there to the entire thing? Judging by what we have seen in the past regarding the removal of the 20 GB model, I am guessing we will be seeing some new choices on shelves this year for those still waiting to get a PS3.
