PS3 - System Sales Spike With 80 GB Restock
Upon restock of the $499 80GB SKU, Sony's PlayStation 3 saw a major increase in sales at Amazon.com last Thursday. Come Friday morning, the high-end model saw an increase in sales, and thus ending up as the no.6 best-selling item in the Video Games division.
The 80GB PS3 model includes an 80GB hard drive and built-in WiFi. This version is also the only one available with the ability to play PlayStation 2 games via emulation software. This model was previously out-of-stock at Amazon.com, but many believed that the demand for the PS3 will increase following strong sales in January.
It was able to sell 269,000 units during the said month, beating Microsoft's Xbox 360, according to data gathered by the NPD Group Inc.
We can expect further increase in sales after Blu-ray's victory last week and especially now that the high-definition format is the default option for consumers.
Retailers have been offering major discounts to drive the purchase of Blu-ray products. For instance, Amazon offered up to fifty percent discounts on select Blu-ray disc titles. Best Buy is also looking to offer an HDTV, PS3 game, and Blu-ray disc package for under $2,000.
Lastly, Sony has announced that it will be releasing a new Metal Gear SKU in the late part of the second quarter of this year which includes an 80GB PS3, DualShock 3 controller, and a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 for $499.99.
