PSP - More Details On PSP PlayStation Store
Some more details have come up today regarding a PlayStation Store for the PlayStation Portable, which had been rumored since the closing of Sony Connect and the moving of staff there to the PlayStation side of things.
The new service is due for launch on the PSP and personal computers in 2008 and will provide alternate titles than what is currently found on UMD or in the PlayStation Store on the PS3.
Sony will be providing a variety of content for the PSP including original titles, classic PSOne games, demos for UMD-based games and downloads, extra content for downloaded games as well as trailers, behind the scenes clips and interviews.
Presently seven titles are being developed by Sony for the new service- three action games, two music- based titles, a racing game and a shooting game. The average size of these downloadables should be from a third to half the size of a UMD disc and provide anywhere from two to ten hours of gameplay.
Sony is also courting various third- party publishers to add content to the store, which could be cheaper in the long run for them as it cuts out the cost of having discs made.
Along with this, thirteen PSOne titles will be available, all of which are currently available via the PS3's PlayStation Store.
Users will have a choice for accessing the new store- either directly through the PSP via a wireless hot spot or download through the PC via USB cable. You will not be able to download to the PC, however. Access via the PC is scheduled to begin this winter in the USA with the PSP service to start in 2008.
This service had originally been revealed by Kaz Hirai during the Sony keynote at the Tokyo Game Show. On a related note, he had revealed PlayStation network sign ups have passed the 2.7 million mark.
