PSP - PlayStation Portable Tops Japan Sales Charts
As the month of September has come to a close, Sony's handheld console has dominated video game hardware sales in Japan. Helping boost the number for Sony's PSP is the release of the Slim & Lite version of the handheld console, along with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. The PSP Slim & lite alone sold 448,000 units, bringing the total PSP units sold for the entire month of September to a staggering 529,000 PSP units.
The last time Sony dominated the sales charts was back in February 2006 when the Nintendo DS run short in supply, which means it took them 19 months before regaining the lead. Despite the craze over Sony's PSP Slim, Nintendo's handheld still managed to sell a decent 391,752 units while the Wii was a far-cry at 168,220 units.
Two hit PSP titles can also be credited for the boom in sales: Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII that sold 663,820 copies, and Konami's Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops which sold 129,873 copies. Famitsu have also detailed that extra PSP peripherals also contributed to the increase in sales.
Meanwhile, the Playstation 2 has still managed to sell 69,400 units for the month of September, selling more than the PS3 which raked in a much lower number with 66,444 units sold. The Xbox 360 is far off in the race with only 13,242 units sold in the market, although the 360 game Halo 3 placed 18 in the top 20 software sales chart, selling an impressive 61,143 copies.
